Did you know that The Big Lebowski inspired a worldwide movement with over 800,000 followers? Yep, the 1998 cult classic’s star, Jeffrey Lebowski (better known as The Dude), is not only behind our new collection, The Big Lebowski x Jimmy Lion, but also a chill-first philosophy. Who knows? You might be a Dudeist and not even know it.
What Is Dudeism?
Simply put, Dudeism is a philosophy based on The Dude’s relaxed and carefree attitude. It promotes going with the flow, avoiding unnecessary stress, and not taking things too seriously. As The Dude himself says: “The Dude abides.”
While inspired by the ‘98 classic, the movement officially began in 2005 when writer and journalist Oliver Benjamin, also known as the Dudely-Lama, founded the Church of the Latter-Day Dude. Since then, thousands of people have been ordained as Dudeist priests in this open and easy-going community. Recent estimates cite as many as 800,000 practicing Dudeists as of today!
The Fundamentals of Dudeism
The Sounds of Dudeism
The Big Lebowski is a fan favorite for a reason so we had to dive into one of its defining aspects: its exceptional soundtrack. Featuring songs by Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Gipsy Kings, the film’s music perfectly captures The Dude’s laid-back and carefree essence. In tribute, we’ve put together our own The Big Lebowski playlist featuring some of the film’s top tracks alongside more modern songs for an eclectic mix that just works.
Because at the end of the day, the Dude abides.
